County Cavan is in the northern province of Ulster, is often referred to as the Breffni County.

It is one of three counties situated in the province of Ulster not being part of Northern Ireland.

The county town is Cavan.

Cavan is ranked  19th  in size of Ireland’s 32 counties in area.

Agriculture, dairy cows and beef cattle are the chief industries.

In ancient times Cavan was known as  Breffnie O’Reilly after its ruling Gaelic family.

Cavan suffered greatly in  the Great Famine, in 1847, the landlord in Mountnugent parish evicted over 200 people

A famous ballad “By Lough Sheelin Side” is based on this event eyewitnessed by the local curate.

The county is generally  covered in bog and forest with poor soil.

There are a lot 0f lakes in Cavan including:
Oughter,   Ramor, Sheelin, Sillan, and Brackley.

Arvagh , Bailieborough, Ballinagh, Ballyconnell, Butlersbridge,  Cavan, Cootehill and Kingscourt.
