County Down

County Down in the northern province of Ulster and is part of Northern Ireland.

The county seat  is Downpatrick and  the largest town is Bangor.

The county borders Antrim to the north, the Irish Sea to the east and Armagh to the west.

Down contains two significant peninsulas: Ards Peninsula and Lecale peninsula.

Belfast Lough and Carlingford Lough touch and it also touches part of the shore of Lough Neagh.

The  Lagan and  Bann rivers also flows through the southwestern areas of the county.

Slieve Donard at over 2,700 feet is the highest peak in the Mourne mountains.
Patrick Brontë, the  father of Anne, Charlotte, Emily Brontë, and Branwell Bronte was born in this region.

Exploris, the Northern Ireland Aquarium is located in Portaferry, on the shores of Strangford Lough.

The Old Inn in Crawfordsburn is one of Ireland’s oldest inns dating back to 1614.

People who have stayed there include Jonathan Swift, Dick Turpin, Peter the Great, Lord Tennyson, Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope, former US president George H. W. Bush, and C. S. Lewis, who honeymooned there.

Saint Patrick is reported to be buried at Down Cathedral in Downpatrick.

Belfast is the major city, followed by Newry.
