County Mayo is in the western province of Connacht.

The county seat is Castlebar.
The river Moy in the northeast of the county is known for its salmon fishing.

Ireland’s largest island, Achill, lies off Mayo’s west coast.
Mayo has Ireland’s highest cliffs, third highest in Europe, at Croaghaun, Achill island.

Towns include:

Castlebar and Ballina are  the two most populous, others include Westport, Claremorris, Achill Island, Ballina and Ballinrobe,

Cliffs along the Atlantic coastlineare spectacular and the Knock Catholic Shrine is in Mayo.
Achill Island and world famous Ashford Castle are also in Mayo.
Admiral William Brown, 1777 to 1857,  born in Foxford, was founder of the Argentine Navy

William O’Dwyer from Mayo was  mayor of New York City from 1946–1950

Mary Robinson, born in Ballina, was the  first female President of Ireland from 1990 to 1997, and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
